Breaking hearts, practicing tough love with our son

Breaking our hearts to practice tough love with David. He called home for the first time since he was placed in detention.  Full of tears, and a story about how he banished the bad version of himself. Breaking Hearts During the first hearing, he didn’t want to talk to us. During the second, he said hello. He isn’t happy there in the detention center.  Nothing to do and in bed by 6pm.  He claims they won’t let him read or do anything.  And he can’t visit with peers. We can go visit him for an hour on Sunday.  In order to visit, we have to give 24 hours notice. He told me that he wasn’t getting his medicine.  I talked to the staff and they said he wasn’t in compliance.  So tomorrow, I’ll find out what that means.  Because he needs his medicine and will have all sorts of problems

Back in the Hospital – was – The Dilemma – What to do with David

This has been something of a roller coaster week. I was in Indianapolis for the National Disability Rights Network annual conference.  Some fantastic networking opportunities.  A lot of great information, fabulous food and weather. At home, David was busy doing what David does. At the top of the list? He forged a check. He was charged with unruly behaviors and taken to safe bed.  So now I need to determine what further charges should be contemplated. Do I press charges for forging a check on my account? Today, I brought him home from the safe bed. For the most part he has been good.  I have allowed him zero freedoms.  I hate doing that, but he needs to know that actions have consequences. To quote him, “safe bed is a worse place than here, and they let me go outside. So how come I can’t go outside.” then he says

Was mental illness Blaec Lammers’ only crime? – CNN.com

Has society gone too far in de-institutionalization? Prison is not the place for our son to get any sort of help with his mental illness. Do I agree with the parents?  Yes.  They were afraid for their son’s life.  Did he deserve prison for this purchase? Do we pro-actively lock away people because they might do something with the guns they purchase? I am pro-gun.  To me gun control isn’t a law.  It is something I was taught by my father as a kid.  Always be aware of where you are pointing the firearm.  Treat every gun as if it were loaded. Are assault rifles needed?  Not in my home. When David comes home, we won’t have firearms in our home.  That is a personal decision. When David is of age, will there be anything preventing him from purchasing firearms?  Likely not.  Does that mean he deserves to be in
