An open letter to the House Appropriations Committee – ND Legislature

Chairman, Members of the Committee. I am writing this here, because I can’t make it today to testify in person.  I believe in the citizen legislature.  I have to believe that you will read these words. My family adopted a special needs child from our state.  When the adoption was finalized, he was court ordered to be under Medicaid until he reached age 18.   We have learned that this can mean a lot of things.  We have  had medicaid coverage turned off, had to pay a recipient liability of 954 dollars a month, and been told that there is nothing more that can be done for our son. A quick bit of history, at the end, I will post some links to relevant sections of this blog, although if you have time, I highly recommend that you start at the home page.  The blog itself is a record of our

Is this the start?

Caught David stealing food. He knows that all he has to do is tell us he is hungry. We just don’t want him hoarding food in his bedroom. Then he lies and blames it on others, including the cats. We know that with his metabolism, he burns enough food for two or three other people.  We are not withholding food. Makes me sad. Is this the start of the end of the honeymood? On a side note, his former psychiatrist agreed to accept him into her case load and not make us wait until the end of April. Time to return to the book “Get Your Joy Back”. Tweet #fighting4answrs

Something struck me this morning.  My son was in a psychiatric facility for more than a year. He was discharged when Medicaid decided to stop funding his care. No transition plan was in place the day my son was released to our care. We have made the best of the last two weeks and I think we have done fairly well.  David has done fairly well. Not one call from any of the staff at the facility to see how we are faring.  To see how David is faring. We have gotten packets of files and documents but no after care or follow up. I feel like David was abandoned by parts of the system that are supposed to help.  I don’t depend on the Government. I depend on people. We will continue to do everything we can do.  We will continue to love our son.  We will continue to
