Beginning to Transform Our Parenting Style

Transform Parenthood – the beginning In my last post, I shared the beginning stages of how we transform ourselves as parents. I also talk about the impetus behind the transformation. Like I stated in that post, making the decision to transform  your style as a parent is easy. Following thru is something else entirely. Do What is Right, Not What is Easy. Right for David is being the in the community with his peers. Public school. Mainstream classes. It means trust where none existed before. In addition it means that we need to be accepting of the fact that things will happen. It means holding David accountable while basically ignoring the incident for a minimum of 24 hours, though 48 hours is better. An update on David.

We are still here.  WhyNotFathers.com has been largely quiet because there hasn’t been a lot to say. That has changed. David’s behavior is becoming more erratic.  The residence has undergone a med wash with him.  A med wash is where they take him off all of his meds and put him on new ones. This has been very difficult with out of control behaviors.  We are looking at a temporary placement in a different facility while he completes the med wash.  This other facility will be in a different town, around 5 hours from home. If David remains out of control then he will need to be moved to a different facility – Long Term. More as we hear about it.   Tweet #fighting4answrs

They had to make some changes to locks on cupboards and closets because David figured out how to pick the locks that were there.  They also made it a rule that morning stuff has to be done before breakfast.  You know, make your bed, brush your teeth, pick up your room – that kind of thing. Staff isn’t allowed to carry cell phone into the cottage now, less temptation for David that way. Seriously looking at putting the whole family into family counseling.  They offer it, so it would be a matter of making the trip up there for services.  One evening a
