Reciprocity

One of the difficult things about raising a child like our son, David, is that the love that we feel for our son will likely never be reciprocated. It isn’t that he doesn’t bond with people, he just doesn’t bond with family. It is a facet of the attachment disorder. He is more likely to bond with a complete stranger, at least briefly, than he is to develop a bond with us. This is our reality.  Just as we can’t force him to modify his behavior, we can’t force him to feel any kind of love or feeling toward the family. As a piece of that, he understands that telling someone, “I will take a knife and stab you” is not appropriate.  He shows no remorse for saying it.  To him it is no different than saying “the sun is shining”. It’s tragic really.  The only thing that he regrets

the value in flaws of the mind

I talk regularly about David’s mental health.  Flaws isn’t a good word for the way he is, or why he is the way he is. Even though most days I am flummoxed by what to do with his behaviors, his mind has value. Every mind has value.  Why? With David, it is the simple things.  When he wants to be helpful, regardless of the reason, you can’t find a better helper.  If one of the pets is upset, he calms them down.  He can calm pets for other people, especially cats, including one that is especially standoffish to anyone except her owner.  He has a wicked sense of humor.  He can hear conversations from 30 feet away, even if they don’t concern him. He is a voracious reader.  A technology wizard. Every mind has value, there is a purpose for everything that is in the world.  Sometimes we wonder at

Five Keys to Parenthood

I see so many people posting their hopes and dreams for their children. What are the keys to parenthood? I am by no means an expert on successful parenting.  In fact, I think that I fail quite admirably at the task everyday.  The key is to not give up. Tomorrow is a brand new day! Tenacity Compassion Love Humor Confidence These are in no particular order. Let’s discuss each of these and see if we can determine why each is on this list. Tenacity – Parenthood is tough.  We have only our past histories to teach us how to parent our children.  For some people past histories are enough.  For others, there isn’t a lot of past history to draw on so we look to other sources.  I am one of those people who looks to other sources.  I am the parent that I am today in spite of the
