A tragedy in North Carolina.  Police shoot and kill an 18 year old man, identified as 5 foot 3 inches tall and weighing 100 pounds. His mother, Mary Wilsey stated vehemently, “This is not how mental health patients should be treated”.

Our son David has mental illness.  He is 83 pounds of lean muscle.  When he is in a manic state, it take three or four people to restrain him, so that he doesn’t hurt either himself or anyone else.

Is it necessary for police officers to use deadly force?  In this instance, evidently the officer felt it was justified.  Even after the man was tasered, and being restrained by two other officers.  I don’t have access to all of the facts.  The people who do, who were present, who have the facts, well let’s hope that the truth comes out.  A tragedy all the way around, no matter how you look at it.

I pray that nothing like this happens to my son.  To my family.  No one deserves that.  I agree entirely with what Mrs Wilsey stated.  “This is not how mental health patients should be treated.”

What then is the appropriate treatment?  If my son is out of control, and I need to call 911 for help, the last thing I would expect is for them to shoot my child.
