The recent suicide of Robin Williams is a tragedy for his family. For the rest of the world it is a great loss. I’ll admit to being a huge fan of the man. I understand addiction. I also understand some things about depression. Did Mr. Williams have Bipolar Disorder? I don’t know, that is between him, his family and his doctor. The discussion that we should be having on an International scale is how we as humans view and treat people with Mental Illness. Depression is a mental illness. David is stable. He is still under the suicide watch and will continue to be for the next couple of days. Tomorrow he sees the psych team, and Tuesday we meet with the therapist. As a result he lost all privileges. Has to spend 20 minutes of every half hour with staff. They usually start their Saturday’s with basketball, which is David’s favorite activity. As a result of the restriction, that was not available. In response to finding this out, David got very upset and said he was going to kill himself. In response, he now spends all of his time with staff. He is under 24 hour observation. He is prone to being searched at any time so that staff can make sure that he doesn’t have anything that can use to hurt himself. At night when he sleeps, he sleeps in the same area where the staff work
